Instructions

A U.S. Passport Card (PASS Card) is a lower-cost portable and lighter version of the classic passport book. In response to new security measures introduced on the public by Homeland Security and WHTI, the PASS Card is equipped with a chip that assigns a specific number to the owner. This number, using proximity-read radio frequency technology is matched to the Custom and Border Protection (CBP) database to facilitate safer crossings, as well as quicker queueing. This PASS Card is a new method of identification that has been approved and specifically designed for border communities that regularly cross the border. It’s smaller and less expensive than a full passport and is a good alternative for people who travel via sea or land across the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean.

How do I apply

  • Everyone U.S. citizens may apply for a passport.
  • If you’re carrying an U.S. passport book and you are eligible to apply for Form DS-82 to apply for a passport, you are eligible to make an application for this card through mail. It is possible to use Form DS-82 for the renewal of your passport in the same manner as you apply for a passport card.
  • If you’ve never owned an U.S. passport book or you aren’t eligible to use Form DS-82, then you have to fill out a form in person, using the Form DS-11.
  • Passport cards are returned via First Class Mail. Passport cards can’t be sent to you by overnight delivery.

Security

  • In order to improve speed, efficiency and security for U.S. land and sea border crossings, passport cards has a proximity-read RFID (RFID) chip. It is not possible to have personal data stored on this RFID chip. The chip identifies the secure database of government databases.
  • Thanks to RFID technology Customs and Border Protection inspectors will be able look up biographical and photos information that is stored in government databases in a secure manner when a traveler is near the station for inspection.
  • The passport card is equipped with state-of-the-art security features that guard from possible counterfeiting or fraud. A sleeve that blocks RFID is included with every passport to safeguard against any unauthorized scanning or reading of the card while it is not being used.

Please note that the PASS Card is not approved for travel on air. Contrary to the passport book the card is not as a travel document that is recognized globally.

Specifications

  • Valid for sea and land crossings only. Not air.
  • It is applicable to travel in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean
