- The Board survey should notify of the National Drug Authority if expired inventory is to be destroyed in the local area in the local district. NDA is obligated to provide advice on the properness of the destruction process and to supervise the process.
- If not advised otherwise, If advised otherwise, the Ministry of Health will periodically gather expired medicines for disposal or destruction by using National Medical Stores vehicles or other transporters.
- An original inventory report for expiring medicine is returned after you hand in the inventory form along with expired medicine to NMS trucks in the regular schedule of delivering the drugs.
- The Obsolete Pharmaceuticals in Public Health facilities, starting beginning at Health Centre II up to Regional Referral Hospitals (RRH) and Private Not for Profit facilities (PNFPs) will be collected during return trips by NMS trucks as part of the routine scheduled deliveries of viable drugs in these healthcare facilities.

Hospitals that are registered, districts or regional pharmacists or any other organization that have pharmaceutical programs and other medical facilities for public use that have an official registration certificate and who wish to dispose of unneeded pharmaceuticals, destroyed or expired medicines.
Validity: 1 year
Maximum Processing Time: 21 Days.
- The disposal or disposal process must be done in compliance with the laws governing health care.
- The Application must include the names of two individuals who will conduct the disposal/destruction.
- Destroying controlled substances must render them unrecoverable , and therefore beyond recycling.
- Expired medicines may not be effective and could be harmful
- Stock that is damaged or expired should be put in a designated area of salvage
- A record in writing of all the stock that is destined to this region should be kept.
- Damaged or expired stock should be destroyed according to local regulations.

- Donated pharmaceuticals that have a lengthy shelf-life can be mismanaged particularly following an armed conflict or natural catastrophe. - The pharmaceuticals could be in stock past or close to expiry dates they may not be suitable for the purpose, or not be recognized because they’re labeled in a foreign language , or might have been shipped in unwelcome quantities.
- The disposal of pharmaceutical waste is always a risky and can pose a risk or harm to humans or the environment. Consequently, it should be properly disposed off. Review all the items in your cabinets and discard any pharmaceutical waste according to the instructions.
The medicine cabinet is being inspected and disposing of any pharmaceutical waste.
- Check every item in your cabinet frequently and get rid of medicines that are no longer in use or have expired.
- Take off the label of instructions from prescription drugs to ensure your privacy.
- Take out expired or unopened capsules and tablets from the carton. Then place the bottle, blister or or capsules in a clear plastic bag, and then take them to the pharmacy.
- Transdermal patches used for transdermal use are folded in half and glue the sticky sides joined and put them inside the pouch that protects them if you have it.
- Return the liquid medicine aerosols, creams, and lotions to pharmacies in the original packaging. Be sure that the liquid medications are not leaking.
- Keep mercury-containing and iodine-containing thermometers separate from the rest of the pharmaceutical waste when you deliver them to the pharmacy.
- Return cytotoxic medications (preparations for treating cancer and other preparations that contain e.g. methotrexate) in their original containers in the bag of a separate plastic.
- Recycle needles and syringes from pharmaceutical waste. Package them in a glass bottle or plastic bottle.
- Never place pharmaceutical waste in a mix waste containeras it can allow children access to it.
- Don’t flush the pharmaceutical waste down the toilet in case the chemicals end up within the soil, they may alter the microbes, fauna and flora of the water and soil.
- Make sure to return any your pharmaceutical waste to the pharmacie or municipal disposal site, where it is delivered for disposal at a hazardous waste disposal facility. The same guidelines apply to the return of the pharmaceutical waste to a municipal waste disposal facility. Households are able to return prescription waste to pharmacies at no cost.
