  1. An accreditation card for journalists is available by contacting the Uganda Media Centre department working in the field of accreditation for foreign journalists.
    • The person who is an employee of an international mass media company or freelancer for the mass media organization in Uganda unless the person is holding an accredited card from the council for media.
    • One cannot within the borders of the territory of Uganda journalistic profession or engage in freelance work unless with the approval from media council or Media Council or Media Centre.
  2. The applicant must write an official letter from their employer to the Executive Director of Uganda Media Centre/ Secretary Media Council stating the purpose of their visit.
  3. Complete the application form G according to Media council. Media council starting the particulars of the applicant. Accreditation forms can be obtained at or at the Media Council or Media Centre office.
    • It is, however, not a problem for journalists to use one of media centres or the Media Centre or the Media Council as their primary line of communications.
  4. Attach two passport-sized photos and two passport-sized photos and a Scanned Copy of your passport. can be attached either electronically or physically.
  5. After filling out the form, complete the form and pay the fee as prescribed. The process of accreditation for journalists is deemed complete at Media Council offices after payment of the fee prescribed and the issuance of an accreditation certificate.
  6. Complete the duly filled-in form G, and attach the pay slips to the Authorized Officer in charge of foreign media, whose staff will inspect the foreign media company.
  7. Get your Accreditation Card that you used to submit your application completed within 30 days of the date that the application was accepted by the Media council in case there is no rejection.

All Journalists from foreign countries are required to submit the following information;

  • Professional Certificates that are or is a degree of diploma in Communication or a Certificate from a reputable educational institution

Students who attend accredited universities and colleges can be accredited. Accreditation will be issued after it is confirmed by the institution that the students are in the final stage of their education and is preparing for their industrial attachment.

Eligibility

Qualifications for Accreditation. The following set of people can be accredited:

  • Journalists who work in media companies.
  • Freelance journalists.
  • Students who study journalism, media and communication studies.
  • Public Relations Professionals.
  • Advertising Companies.
  • Media Trainers.

Fees

  • The application fee to apply for an accreditation card is is $25.

At the time of issuance of the accreditation card:

  • For 2 years, $300
  • For 3 months but not over 6 months for $200
  • For the duration of 3 months $150
  • A sum of $175 USD per person is payable for a time period that is not more than 30 days during journalists’ stay.
  • A fee of USD$225 per person is charged for any stay that extends over 30 days and up to six months.
  • A fee of $325 per person is charged for two years. See the Press and Journalist (Fees) Regulations 2014.

Validity

  • Valid from 3 months until 2 years.

  • The lost press cards can only be replaced upon the production an abstract from a local police department as well as a note from the employer informing of the loss. The replacement cost for the card will be Ugshs 10,000.
  • Students’ press cards will only get issued to student who are going to internships, 4th year undergraduate students, and 3rd year Diploma students.
  • The journalist is not permitted to release information or claim without establishing its truthfulness or its truth.
  • The journalist is not required to divulge the source of their information. He or she must only reveal the source only in the event of a compelling consideration of public interest within the context that is provided by the laws of Uganda.
  • Journalists are not permitted to take or solicit bribes in the attempt to suppress or release the publication of an article.
  • Journalists should not copy the work of other professionals or use the results of studies conducted by researchers without acknowledging the contribution and naming their source of data.
  • A journalist must find out information by using the most effective application of journalistic standards and will not bribe or provide incentives to the source.
  • A journalist should not deny anyone with a legitimate rights a right to respond to an assertion. Corrections and rejoinders must be made public in the appropriate format promptly and in a manner so that they will be seen by those who have read the original statement.
  • Journalists must always strive to keep their own personal opinions from the factual information. When personal opinions are voiced in the media, the public must be made aware.
  • Journalists must make the necessary steps to rectify any negative story that he or she makes about any person or organization.
  • A journalist should not invent or promote the distribution of information that is intended to promote or that could result in the promotion of race, ethnicity, or any other type of discrimination.
