Apply for Refrigerant Handler Permit In Bermuda By Yourself
- To become an authorized refrigerant handler, you must complete the Refrigeration and AC Conditioning class from Bermuda College:
- The course is offered upon request and takes 618 hours depending on prior experience and the qualifications.
- Contact the office at (441) 717-1040 and make an arrangements to participate in the course.
- You’ll need to complete and pass your US EPA Section 608 exam. The college will issue you a certificate of passing.
- Complete and sign The Refrigerant Handling Permit Application. A link is available under the ‘Documents to Use’ section, follow this link for downloading the application.
- Sign a letter from your company to affirm that the business you work for is in good working order. recovery unit for each HVAC servicing vehicle.
- Pass slip, permit application signed by you and a letter from your company in the Licensing Office at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources which is located in the Botanical Gardens, 169 South Road and Paget. Please note that Bermuda College, your employer (if appropriate) as well as your employer (if applicable) and the Ministry of Public Works Waste Management Section will be informed of your certification as well as when it expires.
- A Refrigerant Handler Permit can be issued, and your information will be entered into the database of certified refrigerant handlers and then posted online.
Renewal:
- If you have worked in the refrigeration or air conditioning industry for more than 5 years you must attend a 5-year update meeting held at Bermuda College. The event will give you information on changes in the law and internationally accepted best practices.If you haven’t been working in the refrigeration or air conditioning industry for 5 years you will need to pass this US EPA Section 608 test again.
- After attending the meeting you will receive an acknowledgement letter that confirms your attendance to the 5-Year Update Meeting.
- Sign a letter from your company to ensure that the business that you work for has an effective working order recovery system for each HVAC service vehicle
- Sign and read and sign the Refrigerant Handling Permit Application.
- Take your five-year update letter along with a company letter and a completed permit application and a signed permit application to the Licensing Office at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources which is which is located in the Botanical Gardens, 169 South Road, Paget.

Eligibility
You need a permit if you engage in the following activities:
- Installation, Servicing, and Maintenance of commercial and residential HVAC systems.
- Importation and purchase of refrigerant gases contained in cylinders (Excludes refrigerant used in vehicles).
