In Article 18, the constitution requires to the Government of Uganda to register every marriage that takes place in Uganda. It is the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) is the Government Agency responsible for this job. URSB oversees all laws that govern weddings in Uganda.

HOW to apply

  1. Afterthe wedding ceremonyis over, the bride and groom are required to be present with all the necessary documents and two witnesses in front of the sub-county chief of location in which the ceremony was held as well as the clerk of town when the wedding was held in a municipality or town.
  2. Visit the reception desk and inform the officer in charge that you wish to register your wedding
  3. Complete the registration form. You must all sign the form for affidavits, i.e. the couple and witnesses

  5. A marriage certificate is issued upon payment of an amount. After that, a duplicate of the certificate along with a covering letter from the sub-county’s chief or town clerk are taken to URSB offices to allow weddings to be recorded and registered on the Marriage Register.

  • A proof of nationality such as passport, voter’s card or identification card issued by the nation.
  • The letter is an LC 1 letter that proves residency in Kampala district of at minimum 15 days.
  • A passport-sized photo to prove identity.
  • Affidavits of marriage that meet S.10 in the Marriage Act
  • In the case of foreign nationals, you must provide a certificate issued by the Civil Registration or Vital Statistics Office confirms that the person does not have a marriage.

If the parties are between age 18 and 21 old, they should , in addition to the above 2 submit:

  • Birth certificate to establish parentage.
  • A consent note from the mother or father or legal guardian
  • Photocopies of the identification of the authority that consents

Validity

  • The marriage registration is valid forever unless couple who are married decide to divorce one another.

Instructions

A valid marriage certificate can provide benefits for example:

  • If you are applying for a visa for travel overseas, passport or citizenship, change of name, or divorce or divorce, the marriage certificate is required.
