Get Your Horse Ready for Racing In Jamaica By Yourself

  1. Register your horse with Jamaican Racing Commission (JRC).
    • You must complete a registration form in order to register a horse. A local veterinarian must complete the Thoroughbred registration form. This vet is not the foal’s owner or breeder. The Stallion Service Certificate must be completed by you or an authorized agent. Below are the forms.
    • To register the horse, submit the Thoroughbred Registration Form along with the Stallion Service Certificate.
    • Register and pay the fee.
    • Your application will be validated by the JRC. You will need to pass both a written test and a riding test.
    • After you meet the JRC standards, your horse is registered. You will receive the registration documents
  2. The JRC will approve your horse’s name
    • You must ensure that the Jamaica Racing Commission approves the name of your horse by filling out the name claim form Link. Please take the time to read and understand the form. There are some names you can’t use.
  3. Check that you, the owners, are registered with JRC. Also check that your trainer is licensed
  4. Register your agreement for training:
    • Each owner and trainer must sign the Training Agreement: link. Note: Before signing the form, you must carefully read it.
    • For registration, please bring the completed form to Jamaica Racing Commission.
    • Register the agreement by paying the registration fee
  5. Get your horse micro-chipped
  6. Micro-Chipping should be applied at least five working days in advance of the horse’s expected nomination to race
  7. Your horse must pass the starter (gate test).

Eligibility

To be eligible for racing, a horse must:

  • Register the horse
  • The Jamaica Racing Commission must approve the name of the horse.
  • Owner must be registered.
  • A current license is required for the trainer.
  • The trainer and the owner cannot be disqualified.
  • The Jamaica Racing Commission must register a training agreement.
  • Current vaccinations must be obtained for horses.
  • Micro-chicking is required for horses.
  • The starter (gate test) must be completed before the horse can be taken to the ring.
