National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is a semi-government institution with the responsibility of collecting of, safekeeping, accountable investment, and the distribution of retirement money from employees from businesses in Uganda which are not covered under Government Retirement Scheme. HOW to apply

  1. Apply in person
    1. Go to the National Social Security Funds (NSSF) branch office near you and bring all the necessary documents.
    2. Contact the service desk to ask for the application forms. i.e.Employee form:RegistrationEmployer form: Registration
    3. Read the instructions carefully, and then fill in the form accurately complete the form, then submit it along with the required documents to the official attending who will review and process your documentation.
    4. An NSSF officer will collect your thumb print and photo and then enter your details in the NSSF computer system. An NSSF Card will be issued right away.
  2. Application online
    1. Go to the National Social Security Funds (NSSF) site onlineand go to “what do you want to accomplish” in the drop-down box choose “e statements and self registration”
    2. Select either “employee registration” as well as “employer pre-registration” according to the type of application you’re applying for.
    3. You will be taken to the next page. go through the directions carefully and fill in the correct details on the application form . Then continue, after the form, click “submit”
    4. An identification number is generated. you must present the reference number at the closest NSSF office within 5 working days. the NSSF officer will then take your thumb and photo Then, an NSSF Card will be issued.
  3. Via Mobile app
    1. Download the National Social Security Funds (NSSF) Application on your mobile then enter your national identification Number (NIN) and continue with complete submission of the application form and then send it in.
    2. The reference numbers will then be created. It will transmitted via SMS. you must show the reference number at the closest NSSF office within 5 working days. the NSSF officer will examine your thumb and photo and an NSSF Card will be issued.

Eligibility

  • Employed people aged 16 and over, but who are 55 years or less are eligible to apply for the national social security card.

Instructions

  • The National Social Security Fund (NSSF Uganda) is an National Saving Scheme established by government through legislation known as the National Social Security Fund Act, Cap 222 (Laws of Uganda) to provide social security for employees in Uganda.
  • NSSF Uganda is a Provident Fund and provides coverage for employees in the private sector.
  • The Fund is a scheme for contributing and is funded with contributions from employers and employees of the amount of 5% and 10% of the monthly gross pay.
  • Since 2012 the Fund is managed through the Uganda Retirement Benefits Regulatory Authority while the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development is accountable for supervision of the policy.

NSSF Benefits

  • According to the Act, NSSF administers and provides eligible contributors with the following benefits in accordance with the in the right

Age Benefit

  • This benefit is available to those who have reached old age limit of 55. Age benefits can also be attained upon attaining fifty years old when the claimant is been laid off from work

Survivors Benefit

  • The benefit is given to the immediate members of the family (spouse or kids) that the member died. In the event that the deceased member was not a partner or child, the amount is given to parents in the event that they only depended on that deceased person.

Excempted Work This is paid to employees who are in categories of employment with their individual Social Security Scheme e.g. public service, Army, Police etc

Emigration Grant This is a payment by foreign members of the country or Ugandan members who have left the country permanently.

The Invalidity Benefit This benefit is given to members who cannot be employed as a result of mental or physical impairment.

Invalidation Benefit This benefit is given to members when they reach the age of fifty and if was not employed pursuant to an agreement of service for one year prior to the time of claim.

Investments

  • The NSSF Board of Directors, through Management is legally and fiduciary duty to perform its duties in the best interest of the financial interests of its beneficiaries and to provide the highest level of care. In light of the above guidelines, the Fund has created Investment Policy Guidelines and Strategies which are essential to all of the stakeholders in the Fund.
  • NSSF believes that the anticipated pension benefits are best fulfilled by having the right long-term asset mix, with proper diversification, and a prudent managing risks.
  • The Board of Directors has approved an asset mix that has a high equity skew, and is considering the possibility of a different asset class, Real Estate. This will allow the fund to meet the revenue goals that allow for the interest rates that it wants to offer members.
  • NSSF offers a range of investment options that are permissible in virtually all aspects that make up the world economy. They include development of real estate as well as water, energy health, education financing for mortgages (both secondary and primarial) and SME development.

Other uses for the Document/Certificate

  • NSSF doesn’t offer loans directly to its members. However, NSSF has made investments in equity at various banks, where members have access to loans.
