Obtain a Permit to Practice as an Electricity Installation Person In Uganda By Yourself

  1. To get a permit to be an electricity person, the application must be submitted in writing and given to the installation permits committee that is appointed by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA). You can visit their website by clicking the following link
  2. Candidates are required to fill out the prescribed application form available in the ERA office or at the distribution company. The form is not accessible on the internet.
  3. Send the completed application in full and with all supporting documents, as listed on the “Required Documents” Section on this page to the installation permit office or distribution company responsible . In the event of omission, any supporting documents can make the application incomplete.
  4. After receiving the application, the permits committee’s reception officer will confirm that all the data and documents are correct prior to making the application official to be forwarded to the committee for assessment as well as processing by the installation permits committee.
  5. The committee must within five days from the date acceptance of the application, sign a written acknowledgment that it has received the application. The acknowledgement letter is used as proof of receipt of the application, and also to be used for reference in the event of a need.
  6. During the process of assessing the committee will be led by the following questions:
    • Class A for the purpose of carrying out any and all of works involving electrical installations, upon payment of the required fee
    • Class B for the purpose of carrying the electrical installation work that is of a medium or complexity, which includes high-voltage, low-voltage and basic high-voltage connections as high as 11 kV.
    • Class C for the purpose of carrying the electrical installation work with such a small amount of money, for example:
      • Installation in multi-storied flats as well as mansions, big bungalows, and other structures of elaborate design commercial and residential buildings;
      • Installation of light plants up to 415 volts.
    • Class D for performing work that is limited to any specific type that involves electrical work which includes:
      • installation of residential buildings not exceeding five bedrooms and
      • repairs to equipment up to 240 volts.
    • Class Z to carry out specific fields for example:
      • switch gear installation;
      • central cooling and refrigeration;
      • Installation of generator sets;
      • solar systems as well as
      • Electrical installation designs and systems As per Regulation 8(2) the permit issued pursuant to these Regulations can be renewed, but cannot be transferred.
  7. The Committee with the approval of the authority is to determine annual fees for various classes of permit. Pay the permit charge of $18 equal to Ugandan Shilling 43,000(forty three thousand shillings only) to any institution you like in Uganda
  8. Complete the application form, with all the details to the nearest office. Attach the receipt for payment of surveying fees.
  9. The Authority will notify the applicant by writing of the Authority’s decision within 5 days of the day the decision was taken, and if it is decided that the Authority determines that it is not able to grant the licence will provide the reasons in the notification.
  10. If the application is approved, the applicant must go to the distribution company’s office, show an ERA approval letter, identification document to be confirmed by an ERA approved official. Pay the required license fee , and then get the Electricity Import or Export License.
  11. The license will be subject to the terms and conditions that the committee determines to be appropriate. The licensee is also monitored and supervised from the Authority.
  12. When all the procedures have been completed and all the documents completed Your application will be accepted and the permit to use the installation of electricity will be issued after prior notification.

Required Documents For Obtain a Permit to Practice as an Electricity Installation Person

Eligibility

  • Anyone with a background that falls within the class B or class A are able to apply.
  • A company with a employees who is in the class X classification of installing electricity are eligible to apply.
  • The applicant must be 18 years old
  • Applicant must be competent and qualified to manage the business of installation
  • The applicant must be aware of the most recent version of the rules and regulations that apply to the installation type.
  • Applicant must have adequate premises where he or she can run their business.

Fee

  • A yearly fee that must be paid by the business to be decided by ERA.
  • Fee for application to be paid by each applicant for a permit to install, as the extent determined by UMEME.

Validity

  • The validity period for this permit is one year.

Processing Time

  • The maximum processing period will be 1 (1) up to 2 (2) days to get the power connected to your home

Instructions

  • A person is not permitted to be a person who installs without being legally authorized to do so by an official authorization issued through the Committee.
  • Anyone who violates the rules of these Regulations commits an offence and could be subject to a fine that is not to exceed twenty currency points or jail not exceeding six months or both.
