How To Transfer Ownership of a Vehicle In Antigua and Barbuda

  1. The registered owner as well as the new owner have to submit a written application with both signatures to the Office of the Commissioner of Inland Revenue providing the address and name of the owner who is changing, as well as the date on which they changed possession.
  2. Complete the application along with the registration certificate of your vehicle.
  3. Make sure you pay the cost of registration.
  4. After paying all required fees, after which the Commissioner in charge of Inland Revenue will amend the Register of Motor Vehicles and the licence. It is not required to issue a brand new licence.

In the event of a change in name, the Commissioner for Inland Revenue will change the name of the registered owner to the name of the newly registered owner on the Register of Motor Vehicles. The Commissioner will record the date of substitution with his initials in the book as well as, from that date, the new owner will be considered to have been the official owner of the vehicle.

What Are All The Eligibility

Transfer of ownership for the motor vehicle or trailer, beyond death New owner, registered owner

The name change of the owner on the Register of Motor Vehicle and Certificate of Registration will be authorized by the Commissioner:

  • If the owner of any trailer or motor vehicle changes in the course of an judicial or legal procedure the application can be submitted by the owner who has changed.
  • In the event of death of the registered owner, that person who was the legally personal representative for the decedent of Antigua and Barbuda will be taken to be registered owners for purposes of this transfer in the absence any legal personal representatives in Antigua and Barbuda or elsewhere, the person into the possession of whom the trailer or motor vehicle is transferred shall, for purpose of this transfer, be considered to have the title of registered owner
The personal representative or any other person named above is required to notify the commissioner in Inland Revenue of the death of the registered owner within one month after the occurrence of such event.

When transfer of ownership of a motor car or trailer, if the reason is other than death the trailer or motor vehicle cannot be used for longer than seven days following the transfer of ownership regardless of whether the newly acquired owner has been legally registered as the owner of the vehicle or trailer.
