What are some new ways of producing electricity?

My wife gave me an interesting Christmas present this year. Just yesterday was Christmas. The product is a small incinerator, which allows you to charge your lithium battery by burning small pieces of wood, such as twigs and dry leaves. The battery can be used for camping, and the full charge will give you enough power to run two phones or provide several hours of lighting. It’s quite cool.

When I think about creating electricity from fire, I usually think of steam turbines or the like. This thing doesn’t need steam. The condensing combi boiler recycles the emissions and smoke.

I am intrigued. I would like to learn how electricity is created by heat, without the use of heat to create steam.
