How To Convert or Exchange Foreign Driver License In Costa Rica
- Collect all the documents that are in the “Required Documents” section.
- Submit your documents to Departamento de Acreditacin de Conductores de la Direccin General de Educacin Vial (COSEVI, la Uruca). Applications are accepted from 8 and 11 am.
- Office locations are listed under the the section “Office Office Locations and Contacts”.
- Make sure you pay all fees applicable.
- Complete and pass all mandatory tests.

- Valid identity
- Passport or any other document that proves you’re within Costa Rica legally, example document of residency
- The driver’s license you have currently from a foreign country (must remain valid)
- Medical certificate

Documentation is needed
Foreigners living who lives in Costa Rica may drive the same kind of vehicle that is permitted under their current license for three months (counted as that date you made your first entry to the territory) without needing to apply for an Costa Rican driver’s license. If you plan to drive within the country for more than 3 months it is recommended that you apply for an ordinary license.
