Apply For Obtain an IRD Number for Your Child in New Zealand
- Complete the IRD number application for individual (IR595) form. A URL to get the forms is located under the ‘Documents to use. You can also contact IRD at 0800 227 774 and request an application form to be delivered to you.
- Complete the form and bring it together with two original forms of identification and photocopies of these documents to:
- Any Automobile Association (AA) Driver Licensing Agent
- Any PostShop
- A selected New Zealand Post retail outlet.
- After your application has been confirmed, the verifier will forward the application to IRD. Within 8-10 business days after receiving your application, IRD will mail you an ID card with the child’s IRD number.

What are all the Eligibility
You must make an application for the IRD Number for the child if they’re younger than 16 years old and
- Working part-time
- Earning interest on their balances in the bank or as an investment.
or if your child is younger than 18 and has:
- You’re registered to participate in Working for Families (if you don’t provide IRD ID numbers to your kids, the payments are stopped after eight weeks)
- you’re seeking child support.
If you’re expecting a baby then you may apply for the baby’s IRD number once you have completed an application for birthregistration.

A child or a baby is not required to possess any IRD number, however when parents or children earn income , you must pay tax.
