What are all the Eligibility

To become a registered voter, you must:

  • must be older than 18 and
  • You have been within New Zealand for more than 1 year continuously at one point in your life and
  • You must be an NZ citizen or a permanent resident.

You cant enrol if youre:

  • An NZ citizen who hasn’t been within NZ for the last three years
  • Permanent residents who haven’t been to NZ in the past 12 months.

To people residents of to the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau: You can enroll once you’ve been in NZ for at least one year. There is no requirement for permanent residency in order to vote.

Public service abroad: If youre on duty outside of NZ as an employee of the public sector or a part of the Defence Force or you’re a spouse or parent or a member of one are eligible to still register to vote.

The document is needed

Your name must appear in the roll of electoral voters to cast a vote during the elections.
