How To Register Private Yacht In Cook Islands

“Private Use” is the term used to describe a yacht that is being used for an individual trip or voyage but is not involved in business by transporting products or transporting passengers in exchange for the purpose of remuneration, fares or other gains it is not used to commercial charter operators or for public usage.

Below are some steps to follow on how to apply to register a yacht that is private.

  • To be eligible for the registration process, fill out an application for registration which is available from the deputy registrar (specific to your region) who will assist you in completing your application.
  • If you’re submitting your application, don’t forget to include these documents:
    • Owner Information Company Certificate/CIYS membership letter
    • Other: Carving and Markings Note, including the most recent photo of the vessel
      Pre-Registration Inspection ( If appropriate)
      Evidence of Deletion from the previous flag
      Evidence of suspension from the prior charter flag (if the charter was registered)
      Completed copies of each previously closed CR ( according to SOLAS
      Chapter XI-1, Regulation 5) ( any vessel that is over 500GT)
      A copy of the P&I policy showing the financial security required by MLC Regulation 2.5 as well as 4.2 ( that is applicable for commercial vessels of all sizes; MCI demands that MLC financial security be maintained and will demand proof that it has been maintained) ( applicable to commercially-operated vessels but not barges that are unmanned)
    • Signed, reviewed and signed by a Justice of Peace and an Oath Commissioner and Notary Public, a Solicitor or the Registrar or Deputy Register for the Ships of the Cook Islands Registry or in front of any other authorized legally to perform oaths within the country in which it is signed.
  • Make sure you pay the fee for registration.
  • If your application is accepted through the Registrar of Ships, a Provisional Certificate of Registry is issued. The certificate will be effective from the date of issue and is valid for three months. The requirements for permanent registration need to be met. The Registrar is able to extend the duration of temporary registration under certain circumstances.

Note:

The Registrar might ask you to submit when deemed necessary additional surveys before the issuance of an Permanent Certificate of Registry. In the event of not submitting the required documents, it could delay registration.

  • There isn’t an size or age limit on Yachts.

Validity

  • Private yacht owners have the option of sign up their yacht for one year three years, or five years.
  • The owners can apply for registration for a single (1) year period, and the owner is required to renew their registration on an annual basis. Or, an 3 (3) year , or five (5) year registration may pay in advance which frees the owner of annual filings.

Instructions

  • All vessels are examined prior to registration. The process involves an assessment of the risk to both the vessel and manager. If the risk is acceptable the vessel is offered registration.
