Documents that are required Renew a Permanent Resident Card

  • The Application for Permanent Resident Cards(fully filled out and signed)
  • Supplementary Identification Form http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5455B.pdf
  • One (1) primary identity document
  • Your passport that is valid and current, or a travel document, or
  • the travel or passport document you had at the time of becoming permanent resident (including the passport page that was stamped upon arrival in Canada and then became a permanent resident) or
  • the identity certificate (travel document) issued by Minister of Foreign Affairs Canada or any other country.

Note:

The original should display the type of document and its number, the issue and expiry dates along with your name, photograph and the date of your birth.
If, in exceptional circumstances, it is difficult for you to access one of these, you need to submit a

  • A copy of any identity documents that was issued outside of Canada prior to the time you arrived in Canada or
  • A statutory declaration that you have signed attesting your identity. an additional statutory declaration attesting to your identity , signed by:
  • A person who knew you prior to your arrival in Canada (such as an extended family member) as well as an official from an organization that represents people from the country you are a citizen of or your former residence.

Format: Clear and legible photocopy

  • 2 (2) additional identity papers
  • your Record of your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688) or
  • Your valid provincial driver’s license or a valid provincial photo-identity card, or
  • the current University/College photo student ID or
  • the most recent income Tax assessment, issued by Canada Revenue Agency. Canada Revenue Agency
  • Additional documents to prove of residency in Canada for the last five (5) years

Include the following information in your application:

  • Photographic copies of the pages of passports you have were issued in the last five (5) years (if your stamps aren’t translated into English or French you should translate them, refer to the section on translation of documents) and

A duplicate from one or more of these:

  • Other Income Tax assessments made by the Canada Revenue Agency within the last five (5) years or
  • transcripts from an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada attesting attendance during the last five (5) years or
  • For all children who are in school with written proof of attendance during the past five (5) years.

Note:

If you’re unable to submit two identity documents or proofs of residency as mentioned above, you must submit the date and signature of a statutory declaration that clearly explains the reason that led to the inability.

  • 2 (2) photographs put in a small envelope (no papers clips or staples)
  • Copie 2 from the Receipt Form that shows the amount of money that was paid

Other documents that are required

  • If you are younger than 18, you must submit a copy of the birth certificate and adoption order, as well as a legal guardianship certificate and school documents;
  • The proof of residency requirement is needed If you have been outside Canada for more than 1095 days within the past five years.

Notice: If you live in Canada and it’s been longer than the duration given above, since applying to our Call Centre. Call Centre agents cannot speed the process of submitting your application or decide about your case.

Instructions

  • Go through the instructions thoroughly and then fill in every form that is required.

  • Don’t request a renewal for the current card for PR if it’s in good standing for longer than one (1) year or unless it’s due to a name change that is legal. If not, your application will be denied.
  • If you’re applying to renew your current card, be sure to keep it until you get the new card.
  • If you get your New Permanent Resident Card through mail, it is imperative to delete your previous card.
  • If you’re asked to go to an interview at an office in your nearby CIC office to collect the new card, make sure you carry your current card, together with the originals of the documents that you submitted in the application.
