  • You must immediately report any destruction or theft of your gun documents to the chief firearms officer in your territory or province or to the local police.
  • To get a replacement certificate, or license, you’ll have to download and fill in the Firearms Replacement Request for Documents (link listed below).
  • The completed form should be sent to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police

  • You can also mail this form in its entirety to the Chief of Firearms in your territory or province.
  • Pay the non-refundable license fee.

  • Firearms Licence acquisition and possession: $25.00
  • Firearms Licence Minor: $10.00
  • The Firearms License (Business and Museum): $25.00

Validity

Licenses for firearms are usually valid for five years and they must be renewed prior to when expiry.

Information that can be useful

Different firearm classes:

  • The firearms that are not restricted are rifles that are not restricted in any way, and shotguns other than the ones listed below.
  • Firearms that are restricted comprise:
  • handguns that aren’t banned;
  • semi-automatics, centre-fire guns and shotguns with barrels shorter than 470 millimetres;
  • shotguns and rifles that are able to be fired after their total length has been decreased by folding, telescoping, or any other methods to less than 660mm and
  • firearms that are prohibited by Criminal Code Regulations.
  • The prohibited firearms are:
  • handguns with a length of 105 millimeters or less, as well as handguns that fire .25 or .32 calibre ammunition, with the exception for a select few that are used to shoot in International Shooting Union competitions;
  • shotguns and rifles that are altered through cutting or any other method such they have a barrel that is lower than 457 mm , or their overall length is lower than 660 mm.
  • Full automatics;
  • modified automatics, that is, full automatics that have been modified to only fire one projectile each time the trigger is pressed; and
  • firearms that are not allowed under Criminal Code Regulations.

  • The license for firearms is required to be maintained for the duration of your possession of guns in Canada.
