Apply for Registering a Marriage in New Zealand

On the day of your wedding you must take two copies of the form referred to as a ‘Copy of Particulars of Marriage’. One copy will be given by the celebrant of your wedding to the Director of Marriages who will issue your marriage certificate to allow your marriage to be recorded. Another copy will be handed the bride as a document of your wedding.

Instructions

  • The registration papers have to be witnessed and signed by the registrar according to the Births Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act of 1995 and returned to the Registrar within 10 calendar days.
  • The Marriage Celebrant should take every reasonable step to ensure that the marriage ceremony is recorded with Births, Deaths and Marriages.
  • Bride and the groom in the format they are listed on their marriage Licence should be used during the ceremony in order to clearly identify the bride and the groom. The abbreviations and nicknames can then be used in different parts during the wedding ceremony.
