People change their names due to many reasons. Perhaps you’d like to alter your spelling or you aren’t happy with the name your parents chose for you, you’d like to eliminate that middle name would like to get rid of any family connections or perhaps you simply need to change your name! It is legal to change your name to your first as well as your middle name, surname or middle name or any combination of them.
Information that can be useful
Typically, you are able to legally change the name of your family to any name you’d like to. There are a few exceptions, however:
- It is not possible to change your name to avoid debt or cover yourself from criminal charges.
- You cannot change your name to commit an act of crime.
- You shouldn’t alter your name to deceive. It is usually done by taking the name of someone famous. The courts generally don’t allow this, unless there is an argument that proves not directly related to the celebrity or the use of their name.
- It is not advisable to choose a name that is confusing because it contains punctuation or numerals. Some judges have permitted individuals to write the numbers in a different way for instance “Seven” in place of “7”.
- You shouldn’t pick names that are likely to frighten or offend anyone, or be considered to be obscene.
- You cannot pick a racial slur.
