Instructions
- Certifying documents is the process of confirming documents that originate from one country and are then adapted for use in a different country.
- This process is also known as authenticating. The process of authenticating is authenticating a document to ensure that the legal system of a different country can recognize it.
- It is a government act that allows public officials to verify the authenticity of the seal and signature from the person who signed, issued, or notarized an official document.
- The process is not intended to verify the authenticity of documents or endorse the content of a document; it simply is a reference to the seal, signature and the origin of a document.
Below are the different types of documents that are authenticated
- Public records and documents to be used across other jurisdictions.
- Records that are public (such as wedding certificates and birth certificates medical records, immigration documents and school records etc.)) that come from national organizations (such such as Vital Statistics Unit, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Immigration Department, etc)
- Documents that have been issued as official public records. Note: MFA certifies the signature of the top authority responsible for the documents, which is usually a department or government agency. For instance, a school diploma must first be recognized through the Ministry of Education, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs certifies the signature of an official from the Ministry of Education.
- Documents that have been authenticated by notaries in Belize. They are considered to be documents that are able to be certified by MFA.
Information that can be useful
- This is not an Apostille. Apostilles come in a certain format and issued by the authority in charge which is the Registrar General of Belize. A fee of fifty dollars to obtain an Apostille.
- Certifying statements are not as formal than Apostilles They are not required to cost to obtain them however they are issued in Belize it is issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and not by the Registrar General.
- Certifying declarations are used by countries that do not have signed or are not participating member states of the Hague Convention.
- Certifying certificates are also utilized to verify educational records that have to be sent to specific foreign universities.
