Adopting in Belgium

  • After the court’s judicial process The clerk at the tribunal will invite the appropriate municipal administration to record the procedure in the registers of deaths, births and marriages. The adoption will then be added to the register of population.

The Adoption of Abroad

  • The file from the foreign country must be subject to the approval of the central authority of the federal government, to ensure that a ‘certificate for record of the foreign decision to adoption’ is obtainable.
  • The adopting parents have to present the foreign file as well as the adoption certificate to the municipality in order to get the entry of the adoption on the register of population and for possible transcription into the registers of deaths, births and marriages. Although the transcription isn’t mandatory, it is recommended that you ask for the Registry office to transcribe adoption outside of the country. It is then possible to get the transcription anytime.
