In the present instance that of Senior Citizen Grant Selection of beneficiaries are not required be made to apply. Selection is automated and computerized. The process is according to the following:

  1. The project’s officials visit the civil registry of national importance (where all information on births and deaths are collected) and collect the data.
  2. Beneficiary lists are created following a review of the data taken through the civil register.
  3. The lists of beneficiaries generated are distributed to village chairpersons to be verified at the local level by the members of the community themselves.
  4. After the names in the list are deemed to be acceptable by the community and the list is given by the Program coordinator to the contracted companies who must make payments in order to update their records and list of beneficiary. For the Senior Citizen Grant, MTN Uganda is the contracted Mobile Money service provider, so they are notified of the list. They in return, they make SIM cards for beneficiaries.
  5. Every beneficiary is issued a the beneficiary ID card, and is then registered as per the typical Mobile Money registration process.

Eligibility

Senior citizens aged 65 years or more.

Validity

The elderly will continue to receive payment up to the time of their death. beneficiaries from the Senior Citizens Grant are not suppose to receive payments transfers.

Instructions

Beneficiaries are older people in the categories listed below:

  • The Mentally and Physically Impervious elderly people who live in an isolated environment with no family or community support
  • The Chronically Sick: patients suffering from incurable illnesses;
  • The Homeless: elderly people who reside in makeshift shelters for a short period in the countryside or who live outside in the street or in small shacks constructed with temporary materials in large urban areas;
  • The Widows and Widowersare people who have lost their personal but are still responsible for taking care of their families;
  • The caregivers of orphans and other vulnerable Children: people with a responsibility of caring for children of primary school age;
  • The economically active poor These are those with a high level of economic activity but aren’t employed. The majority of the work they perform is unpaid or voluntary family-related work.

In Uganda older people are men and women aged 60 years or more. Senior citizens contribute a lot to the community as guardians of the traditions and cultural values that are passed down through generations. Recognizing the important contribution of older adults government officials have boosted their potential by creating an environment to meet their requirements and rights.

The older persons ‘ grant in Uganda is a combination of Active Ageing which is the procedure of maximizing the opportunities for health, participation and security to enhance the quality of life for people as they get older and Community Based Care Services which provides health services that are accessible to older people who live near their homes, and also encourage them to take part in the process of development.
