The registered officer responsible for registration of a registration area must record deaths and enter into the register or permit to be entered the required details of each death notifying.

HOW to apply

Registration of death that occurs in Uganda

  1. Visit the civil register office in the area where the death took place or where the deceased lived.
  2. Inform the register officer of what has happen to the best of your knowledge and ability, give the prescribed particulars, which shall be entered forthwith by the registration officer in the register.notification of death
  3. You must confirm that the entry is correct by signing the register or affixing an inscription in the registry.
  4. The death must be recorded as soon as it occurs, and in all cases not later than three months after the date of the death.

Note :A death shall not be recorded after the expiration of 3 months from the date of death, except in the event of the applicant adhering to the requirements that can be specified by the rules.

Death registrations taking place outside of Uganda.

  1. In the event of the death of a person who died abroad the person who gives notice of the death must visit NIRA National Identification Register Authority office (NIRA) or the area register officer of the district in the area where the deceased resided and present the following documents
    • the death certificate issued by the relevant authority in the country where the death took place, along with the English version of the document, in case it’s non-in English;
    • in the case of an Uganda Mission in the country where the death took place the certification of someone from the Mission of the Mission that it is convinced with the evidence provided to the officer, and the questions that the officer has made, that the specifics of the death are true or
    • If there isn’t an Uganda Mission in the country or any other proof as the Minister can prescribe within the Regulations.
  2. The applicant must confirm in writing to the registration officer that the authenticity and accuracy of the document produced.
  3. After receiving the required information above, the registered officer will make the entry of the death into the register in the manner prescribed.

Eligibility

  • Next of Kin, or the family member of the deceased at the moment of death of the deceased or living within the same place as the deceased
  • the person who is the owner of the house that to the person’s awareness, the death occurred or an inmate in the house where the death took place , or any person who is able to locate or take control of the remains of the decedent or making arrangements for that body or the remains of the dead to be destroyed and in the manner that is appropriate.
  • A medical professional if the death occurred within the hospital
  • An officer of the law If the death took place in a prison, or in an accident

  • A death registration that took place in Uganda is absolutely free

  • Each death must be recorded the moment it occurs and, in any event no later than three months after the date of the death.

Instruction

  • After you have registered the death of a loved person You will be granted a burial permit by the authority that issued it, you will then be able to begin funeral arrangements
