How To Apply to Get Married In Australia
- You’ll have to get the “Notice of Marriage Intention Form” which you need to hand to your wedding celebrant at least one month prior to your wedding. The celebrant will assist you to complete the form. The form can be completed and witnessed in other countries outside Australia when needed.
- If you are less than one month to go before the wedding date, speak with your wedding celebrant. A specified authority can allow a shorter notice in certain limited situations.
- You’ll need to provide your celebrant these documents:
- Formal Notice of Intention to Wed Form
- Documentation of the date and time of birth
- Identification
- If any of the parties has been previously married, divorce papers or any evidence that the marriage prior to it was ended
- The celebrant could also ask you to sign an official declaration in support of your documentation

What Are All The Eligibility
To legally get married to be legally married in Australia applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Not be married to anyone who is not
- Not be married to an adult, grandparent or child, grandchild, brother or sister
- At least 18 an age, except if a judge has ruled that a marriage is valid if one of the parties is aged between 16 and 18 years old
- know what marriage is all about and freely agree to be husband and wife
- Use specific words in the ceremony.
- Send a written statement of their intention to get married to their licensed celebrant within the stipulated time.
