Get Work Permit Exemption In Jamaica By Yourself

  1. To obtain a work permit exemption, applicants must apply to the Work Permit Department of Ministry of Labour and Social Security through their potential employer, contractor or legal representative. You can access the Link MLSS office information.
  2. You can either get the application form at any of the MLSS office or download it from their website via this link: Links (Application Form).
  3. You can apply for work permit exemption for a maximum of 30 days. If you’re applying for work permit exemption for more than 30 days, fill out questions one through fourteen and question twenty nine. If you are applying for work permit exemption to be granted for a longer period than thirty days, fill in question one to nineteen. Your prospective employer will complete part two. Please note that the application form must be completed in three parts.
  4. Your employer will then send a formal letter to the permanent secretary at the MLSS stating clearly:
    • You full names
    • Your nationality
    • Exemption sought for a specific period
    • A description of the duties required by the applicant.
  5. Attach all required documents to the application form. Then visit any branch to pay the non-refundable processing fees and receive the payment receipt.
  6. After your application and supporting documents are completed and signed, stamped and certified, submit the application, including the payment receipt, to the MLSS office. Please note that application forms and cover letters must be submitted in duplicate with the required supporting documents.
  7. The MLSS officer who received your application will review it and forward it to the appropriate authority for approval.
  8. Your application will be reviewed, and if it meets all the requirements, the MLSS may approve your application
  9. Once the permit is approved, your employer will receive notification and be required to pay the exemption fee for work permits. The Permit takes effect on the date that it was approved.
  10. After payment, the employer can request the exemption from the MLSS and issue it to them.

Required Documents For Get Work Permit Exemption

  • Include a cover letter that outlines the nature and length of the work. You should also include details of the investment proposal (Documentary evidence of proposed investment(s should be submitted).
  • Documentation proving qualification
    • Attestation of academic, professional or accreditation letters or copies certified by the institution.
    • A letter of recommendation or written reference from the previous employer of the applicant or evidence of the business/commercial/professional activity of the applicant abroad.
  • A resume that highlights the applicant’s professional and/or business experience.
  • Police records
  • Evidence of business registration
  • A Tax Compliance Certificate is required for applicants who are self-employed and where the enterprise has been in operation for less than one year.
  • The certified copies of pages taken from the applicant’s passport proving (a) proof that they are authentic, (b) their passport number, (c), date of issue and expiry and (d) landing status in Jamaica.
  • Two photos
  • Number of Taxpayer Registration (TRN).
  • Receipt of payment

Validity

  • The exemption from work permit can be granted for a shorter period than 30 days, or longer than 30 days depending upon your application

Instructions

  • Work Permits cannot be transferred. When you want to leave one employer and accept another job, you must submit a letter from your previous employer. This will inform the employer if there are any objections to you accepting work elsewhere in Jamaica.
