Obtain Residence Permit for Athletes In Iceland
- Take all the necessary documents that you’ll need when you apply for the procedure.

After arrival in Iceland

- After the medical certificate has been received and the photos of the foreigner has been taken the permit will be granted and the permit will be sent to the address provided by the applicant.
- The date that the permit was issued is the day that officially begins the residency process in Iceland.
Renewal of the permit
- An applicant’s photo will be taken at the time of renewal and the applicant must be able to carry their passport.
- If renewal applications are not received within one month prior to when expiration of the permit the applicant must leave Iceland in the meantime that the application process is in progress and the application isn’t considered to be a renewal, however, it is considered an initial permit.
Required Documents For Obtain Residence Permit for Athletes
The permit is required to use the permit for the first time
- Form of application that has been completed

- Medical Insurance: A confirmation from an insurance company that is authorized to offer the services of Iceland that the person applying for insurance has bought medical insurance that covers at minimum 2.000.000 Icel.kr. that is valid during the initial six months of the stay in Iceland.
- Authorization: The applicant could authorize an individual living in Iceland the right to pursue their application (not an absolute requirement to process the application).
- Homeowners Certificate The applicant must be able to prove that they have secured housing for the length of time requested. It must also be verified by the home’s owner as well as witnessed by two adult.
Notes:
- Any foreign document issued in other languages than English or any or more of the Scandinavian languages must be translated using an certified interpreter.
- The Directorate can request the authenticating foreign documents.
For renewal of the license

- Housing certificate The applicant must demonstrate that he/she is in a secured housing for the length of time requested. It must also be attested by the owner of the property in the presence of two adult.
- Social Service Certificates: An candidate must present a certification from the relevant municipal services in the city where he/she lived during the past year showing whether or not they have been granted any financial assistance from the social service.
- Tax payment record: The tax payer will need to provide a certificate from the tax authority in question of the tax paid in the last 12 months.

Eligibility
To be able to obtain a residence permit based on the grounds of being employed as a player in a team or a coachor athlete for a club you must an active part of the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland.
Fees
Application fee for permit, for anyone over 18 years:
- The permit was issued for the first time 12,000 ISKR
- Renewing the license The permit is renewed for 6,600 ISKR
- Permanent Residence permit 12,000 ISKR
Permit application fee for those who are under the age of 18 years:
- The first issue of the permit The permit was issued for 6,000 ISKR.
- Renewing the license The renewal fee is 3,00 ISKR
- Permanent Residence permit Permanent Residence permit: 6,600 ISKR
Notes:
- If the applicant chooses to cancel his/her application, or when the application is refused the fee for application that the applicant paid may not be returned.
- Be aware that banks may charge a processing charge for international transfers. If the fee is not paid in a separate transaction the bank may deduct the fee from the amount you transferred. This will result in funds not getting transferred into Icelandic Directorate of Immigration. Icelandic Directorate of Immigration. Make sure you print the receipt of payment and include it in your application.
When you make a deposit it is required to give your name and birthday exactly as you would print on your passport.
Validity
- The permit permits family reunion.
- The permit does not constitute the basis for permanent residence permits. Exemptions include those who received residence and work permits to sportspersons (B and C permit) prior to the amendment of the law on August 1 of 2008 and have been granted permanent permits since that time.
Processing Time
It could take up to 90 to 90 days (on on the basis of an average) from the time all required supporting documents have been received by Directorate to review your application. If documents supporting your application are missing or insufficient, the processing time could be longer.
