Although electric cars were introduced in India long ago, their range was limited and their designs were poor. However, with the advancements in batteries and design, it is likely that electric vehicles will be the dominant market for the next decade. These are the top upcoming electric cars for India:

.1 Tata Tigor EV Tata Motors displayed the Tigor EV during 2018 Auto Expo. Along with Mahindra, the company has been granted a deal to supply EVs for government officials. The company has already delivered 350 units to EESL. The second phase of the supply will start in 2019. The Tigor EV follows the same design as regular Tigor. People won’t recognize it except for the EV badges. Tata Motors gave a smaller battery to Tigor EV in order to keep the price down. An increasing battery would make Tigor more expensive for many people. Tata Tigor Electric Vehicle uses a 216 Ah 16V battery and a 3-Phase AC Motor to produce 39.95 horsepower. This is a significant improvement over the Tigor’s combustion engine. The Tigor EV claims a range of 130km, which is sufficient for city driving or daily driving. It also has a top speed exceeding 100 kph. Tata Motors claims that the Tigor EV can charge from zero to 80 percent in as little as 90 minutes using a fast charger, and three hours with a normal charger. Tata Motors offers a regenerative brake system to increase range. The electric motor is connected to a single-speed automatic transmission, and power is transmitted to the front wheels. The electric motors produce instant torque, which allows for good acceleration. Tata Motors has placed EV letters in blue on the front grille and EV stickers on the sides to signal that this is not a regular Tigor. The interior of Tigor EV is the same as before. It has same features such as climate control, push-button start, keyless entry, alloy wheels and an infotainment system that includes Bluetooth. 2.Hyundai Kona electric :Hyundai already stated its desire to launch an electric Kona SUV. This would be South Korea’s attempt to capture a portion of India’s EV market. The Kona Electric could be a key role for the brand, as the Indian government is preparing to bring pure electric mobility to the country by 2030. The regular version of the SUV will be available in the domestic market by next year. However, the electric-powered model should arrive in the country by 2020. The Hyundai Kona Electric would have the same design as the regular model. There could be some unique features that make it stand out from the regular model with a combustion engine. The Hyundai Kona has a unique design that immediately grabs your attention. The Kona’s design features are quite different from the standard Hyundai models. The Hyundai Kona has headlamps that are lower than the standard position, and separate LED daytime running lamps that are positioned on top. 3. Nissan Leaf : Nissan Leaf is going to be a very important product in the Indian electric vehicle market very soon. This is also going to be a crucial car from the Japanese brand in order to grab a sizeable chunk the country’s EV market considering the Indian government’s ambitious strategy to adopt pure electric mobility across the country by 2030. The Nissan has just unveiled its new Leaf with an attractive and sharp styling. Expect this electric powered car to arrive here next year. The 2018 Nissan Leaf looks like have taken inspiration from the new generation Micra hatchback. It dons a mature styling compared to the predecessor. Speaking about the style, the sharp LED projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, Nissan’s signature V shaped chrome trim at the black front grille, sculpted looking bumper with rectangular shaped fog lamps enhance the visual appeal of the Leaf EV.Moving to the side profile of this electric hatchback, there is sporty alloy wheels, subtly flared wheel arches, sleek creases above the rear fender, blackened ORVMs, black glass are and the roof too wears a black colour theme. 4.Tata Tiago EV : While Tata Nano EV would be the entry level electric car from Tata Motors, the Tiago EV would arrive as a more premium model. Tata Tiago regular model has already garnered pretty much attention and positive response from the buyers. At the LCV 2017, Tata Motors has displayed the Tiago EV concept that appears as attractive as the regular model and it could arrive in the country by 2020. Upon launch, this would play important role in making Tata Motors a major player in the Indian EV market. Speaking about the design, Tata Tiago EV gets identical design as the internal combustion engine powered model. It gets a smiling pattern black front grille with sleek chrome trim at the bottom, sharp headlamps, a sculpted looking front bumper with black air intake featuring a horizontal slat through the centre, chrome bezel around fog lamps. As the Tata Tiago EV Concept has been showcased, it gets the same design at side profile as well. There are a sleek character lines, body coloured ORVMs with integrated turn indicator, blackened glass area and alloy wheels. Rear profile of the Tata Tiago EV gets wraparound taillights, roof spoiler and there is a chunky bumper as well. However, the production model could arrive with some distinctive design elements that will make it slightly different looking compared to the regular model that is powered by internal combustion engine. While the exterior of the Tata Tiago EV remains same, its interior also appears with the same basic design and features. However, there are little bit of extra control buttons inside the cabin compared to the regular model. This electric powertrain equipped Tata Tiago is expected to come weighing lighter than the standard model presently available in the market. Expect upmarket quality materials to be used in seat and upholstery. Space too is likely to remain same as the current model. Developed by Tata Motors European Technical Centre based in UK, the Tiago electric hatchback draws energy from an 85 kW capacity electric motor.It generates 200 Nm of peak torque and the hatchback can run at a top speed of 135 kmph. It would take around 11 seconds to accelerate to 100 kmph from standstill. Expect a good range from this car. A single speed transmission will deliver power to the front wheels of this electric hatchback. Expect the Tiago EV to be displayed in India at the 2018 New Delhi Auto Expo and it would be launched here by 2020. 5:Mahindra KUV 100 EV : Mahindra is one of the manufacturers who has committed to EVs before its rivals. The company has acquired REVA which is the only electric car manufacturer in the country and the first product was e-Verito which is in the market for sometime now. The government is planning to give more importance for EV and by 2030 atleast 30 percent of sales to come from EVs. The company is planning to introduce EVs of current models and they are currently working on it. One of the products in the pipeline is KUV 100, the entry level product of Mahindra. The company hasn’t released much details about KUV 100 EV but we can expect exterior and interior to be carried over from regular model. changes will be made under the hood and it could be powered by one of the new electric motors from Mahindra which is currently under development. The e-Verito electric motor is good enough for city usage but for highway and other purpose it is lagging behind compared to international models. The Indian manufacturer is working on improving range and performance of electric motors and this will be used for KUV 100 EV. We can expect Mahindra to give fast charging option for KUV 100 as it will help customers save time. 6.Tata E-Vision EV: Tata Motors showcased E-Vision concept at 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The E-Vision concept production model is going to be a C-segment sedan and it is one of the most beautiful concept from Tata Motors with flowing lines and sleek body which makes it so popular among visitors. The company has confirmed that production model will come for E-Vision concept. The Indian manufacturer is committed towards electric mobility as they have already introduced Tigao and Tigor EV. The company is working on new battery pack which could improve range to a new level compared to current products. The expected range from new battery is 300-420 km along with a small charging time.]otor’s OMEGA EV architecture is the base of E-Vision concept and the company has made some changes to the platform especially for this particular concept. The India manufacturer hasn’t given much details about battery pack of E-Vision EV but it can accelerate from 0-100 kph in 7 sec and top speed is 200 kph. The E-Vision concept can be charged using fast charger and standard charger with much faster charging times than conventional models. Another area, Tata Motors is focusing is connected technologies which could play an important role in future products and E-Vision concept is loaded with cloud mapping, geospatical mapping and more. of E-Vision concept is based on Impact Design 2.0 philosophy and production model will carry most of the design theme of concept model. The interior has a futuristic design theme with lack of buttons and everything is controlled from touch screens. We can expect Tata Motors to introduce production model of E-Vision concept in 2021. 7:Renault Zoe EV : Renault Zeo EV is a small hatchback and it is on of the most popular EVs in European market. Nissan which is Renault partner company is planning to launch Leaf EV in India and the French manufacturer is following the foot steps of Japanese manufacturer to launch Zeo EV in India as the company is planning to bring it as a CBU model initially. The design of Zeo EV is attractive with swoping headlamp with a curved front bumper along with small air-dam and front gets a sleek design to reduce resistance. The windshield is steeply raked for least resistance for air and the charging port is hidden under Renault logo. On the side, Renault has given two shoulder lines in which one starts from headlamps and ends on front door.second starts from front door handles and goes all the way to tail lamps. The rear design is similar to other Renault models and it comes with LED tail lamps. The Zoe measures 4084 mm in length, 1730 mm in width and 1562 mm in height. The wheelbase of Zoe is 2588 mm and comes with 338 litres of boot space. The interior of Zoe continues the simple design theme of outside as the company has given three spoke steering wheel along with digital instrument cluster. The Zeo is loaded with features like touch screen infotainment system, climate control, push button start, alloy wheels, power windows and more is available with two electric motors – the R90 produces 92 PS of power and 225 Nm of torque while the Q90 produces 88 PS of power and 220 Nm of torque. The R90 has a range of 403 km and Q90 has 370 km. The company also offer both fast charging and normal charging options. We are expecting Renault to launch Zoe EV in 2020. 8: Nissan Note e-Power : Nissan Leaf is the best selling EV in world and the company is following up with Note e-Power which is slightly different to Leaf as it’s a full EV which need to be charged externally but e-Power doesn’t it as it has petrol engine to make electric energy and it works like a range extender like BMW i3 and i8 models. The Note e-Power gets a 1.2 L three cylinder petrol engine along with power generator, invertor and Leaf electric motor. The 1.2 L petrol engine produces 79 PS of power at 5,400 rpm and 103 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm – 5,200 rpm. The electric motor produces 109 PS of power at 3,008 – 10,000 rpm and 254 Nm of torque at 0-3,008 rpm. also comes with 1.5 Kwh battery which is used to generation electric power for the engine. The driver can run Note e-Power on combustion engine and electric motors along with using both these also for extra boost. Nissan claims an impressive 40 km electric range for Note e-Power and an average 37 kmpl which is impressive. The design of Note e-Power is similar to Leaf but its more like a small MPV rather than hatchback. The company designed the model to produce less drag. The Note e-Power gives lots of space for passengers at front and rear. We can expect Nissan to introduce Note e-Power in 2020 and it could be priced above Leaf. 9.Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV : Maruti Suzuki is currently developing next generation of WagonR and it is one of the most popular cars from the Indo-Japanese manufacturer. Suzuki and Toyota signed a deal to share current models along with developing EVs and future technologies to drive growth for both companies. Toyota is one of the leading companies in hybrid technology and this knowledge could help both companies in EV development also. This partnership will be helpful for Maruti Suzuki to launch technologically advanced cars in India before rivals do it. The WagonR EV will be the first electric model from Maruti Suzuki to be launched in India. This new model will be developed by both Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. The launch is expected to take place in 2020. expected to be constructed at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant and production will be handled by a joint company by Suzuki (50 percent), Toshiba (40 percent) and Desno (10 percent). Suzuki is yet to take a final decision on which manufacturing plant to use for manufacturing of new WagonR EV. The new Gujarat plant will be most likely to take over production as it is the most advanced factory of Maruti Suzuki and it could be changed for manufacturing EV as final assembly line of new Gujarat plant will start production only in 2019 or early 2020 which is the timeline for launch of WagonR EV according to current reports.
