  1. Anyone who wants to sell live animals obtain a cattle trader’s license from the Commissioner Animal Production and/or an export license from the Commissioner Animal Health
  2. The exporter must be granted an import Permit that is written in English or with an English translation from the authorities in the field of veterinary medicine of the country of destination.
  3. The exporter should submit an application in writing to the Director of Animal Health and attach the Import Permit or the animal health requirements of the country of destination.
  4. The exporter must make an application with the commissioner of Animal Health requesting for a vet health certificate for export of live animals within 15 days before the date of export. The application should contain the type of animal, its sex, the number and date of birth of the animal and the unique identification numbers or marks as well as the country of the destination and the consignee. The application must be submitted along with a copy of the export licence.
  5. The exporter should include a copy of an invoice which identifies the cost of exporting animals as well as a Price List, packing list or Air Waybill or bill of Lading and any other pertinent documents, to the request.
  6. The Veterinary Inspector authorised by the commissioner for Animal Health shall study the background and the status of outbreaks of animal diseases within the place of origin as well as the surrounding areas, and perform physical and clinical examinations and lab tests to verify that the animal health requirements are met as stipulated in the Export Permit
  7. In the event that animals exported were tested or vaccinated for any illness the exporter should provide a vaccination certificate or other proof to the certifying veterinarian inspector for guidance in making decisions and/or record the details in a health certificate issued by the veterinary department.
  8. The names of the exporter as well as consignees in the destination country must match the names on all relevant documents, especially in the passport of the person or official identification document.

Procedures for export at the Exit Point. Exit.

  1. MAAIF issues a veterinarian medical certificate of health in two copies written in English for animals that are exported to the destination country.
  2. If the animal is not accompanied, a photocopy of the vet health certificate should be added to the containers or crates of the animals being exported.
  3. When animals are traveling with the owner’s personal possessions the initial copy of the vet’s health certificate must be presented to the veterinarian inspectors at point of departure.

Eligibility

  • All foreigners and residents of Uganda who have a animal product export license are eligible.
  • Foreign tourists must possess the tourist visa.

Fees

  • The criteria for determining the amount of fees that must be paid to licensing authorities can be different.

Validity

A license issued under an ordinance’s regulations is good for a year and expires on the 31st day of December each year.

Instructions

  • If products or animals that originate from zones or countries devoid of diseases are transported through airports or seaports in the countries or zones where prescribed illnesses e.g. foot and Mouth disease (FMD), African Swine fever, Avian Influenza, Contagious bovine pleura pneumonia (CBPP), Bovine Spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and Peste des petits Ruminants (PPR) is believed to be present and are present, these (according according to OIE) are deemed as being from areas or countries and consequently be restricted from exportation.
  • The transportation of animals or animal products from one country to the next via Uganda Republic of Uganda shall be granted by the Commissioner of Animal Health.
