Apply for Live Animal and Animal Products Import In Uganda By Online

Below are the steps to follow for Animal as well as Animal items import.

  1. A person who is an importer who wishes to import live animals or products in Uganda Republic of Uganda shall apply for an Import Permit issued by the Commissioner of Animal Health (CAH) prior to importing.
  2. The importer must make contact with the Commissioner for Animal Health and request for information regarding the protocol and health requirements when importing products or live animals into Uganda.
  3. The importer must send a letter requesting to bring live animals and/or items into the United States to the commissioner for Animal Health, at least 7 days in advance of an importation.
  4. The application must provide the origin (country) and the company and the type of animal species, breed, sex, and the quantity.
  5. A Commissioner of Animal Health will conduct a investigation into the status of animal diseases in the country of origin and the process through which the merchandise is exposed during manufacturing to determine the appropriate animal health standards to be included in the Import Permit to reduce the possibility of transmitting disease through the importation.
  6. If the requirements for animal health reduce the possibility of transmission of disease the Director of Animal Health shall issue an Import Permit with the information about the requirements for animal health and ports of entry to be used in this specific entry (the commissioner of Animal Health may not issue the Import Permit if the risk is considered to be unmanageable).
  7. The importer must provide an Import Permit in the direction of the authority for veterinary medicine of the country from which originated the animal/product to inspect, prepare the animals/goods, test, certify and supervise loading the animals or goods on the vessel for shipment of the particular consignment in compliance with the requirements for animal health that is set by the Commissioner of Animal Health.
  8. The importer must then provide the specific date of arrival of animal/products imported to the veterinarian official at the entry point to arrange all necessary facilities, at least three days prior to the date of arrival.

Import Procedures Requirements.

  1. The animal/products should be accompanied by a valid Veterinary Health Certificate, in English or with an English translation that is issued by the veterinary authority in the origin country attesting that the animal/products satisfy the animal health standards stipulated within the Import Permit
  2. If imported animals/products are used for breeding purposes or pedigree certification is required, additional proof should be provided to the veterinary inspector at the entry/exit point.
  3. The importer must be able to attach an invoice which outlines the value of the animal imported or Price List and packing List, Air Waybill / Bill of Lading and etc. in the form of an application.
  4. The documents accompanying imports of animals or products must be submitted to the official Veterinary inspector for examine the general condition of the animals/products imported upon the arrival. The veterinarian inspector at the point of entry must examine the documents as well as animals or products to look for signs of illness or infraction to sanitary standards.
  5. To meet the sanitary requirements for imports of certain animal species, the details are given on the Annex.

Post-Import procedures at the point of destination.

  1. The animals or products will be transferred to animal quarantine/holding facilities following general inspection upon arrival.
  2. In the quarantine period of 21 to 30 days, all samples from imported animals must be taken to check the counter or for certain illnesses as per the guidelines.
  3. If the animals being imported have died or become sick while traveling or in quarantine the concerned parties should be advised immediately. A Animal Quarantine Station (AQS) veterinarian will take urgent action to study the illness and/or stop the spread.
  4. In the case of goods with a holding time of more than one year, it will differ based on the standard tests that are recommended.
  5. The final license to import or release is issued after all animals/products imported have passed the tests, and then released at their final destination after the post-import process of quarantine.

Eligibility

  • Foreigners and Residents of Uganda possess Animal Products license are Eligible.
  • Foreign tourists must possess the tourist visa.

Fees

  • Criteria for determining the amount to be paid to licensing authorities can be different.

Validity

The license issued under the Act lasts for one year . It will expires on the 31st day of December each year.

Processing Time

Processing can take 3 months up to 6 months.

Instructions

  • If any animal or product from zones or countries without disease are transported through airports or seaports in zones or countries where prescribed illnesses e.g. foot and Mouth disease (FMD), African Swine fever, Avian Influenza, Contagious bovine pleura pneumonia (CBPP), Bovine Spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and Peste des petits Ruminants (PPR) is recognized to be present and are present, these (according the guidelines of OIE) are regarded to be coming from countries or zones and will consequently be excluded from being imported.

All fish or transports of live animals or animals’ products between one nation to another via Uganda Republic of Uganda shall be approved by the Commissioner for Animal Health.
