  1. To apply to be considered for NLU Membership, candidate must make contact with to the National Library of Uganda offices in person, and then submit a request.
  2. Here , you will receive an application form you must fill in and complete and.
  3. The applicant must ensure that he/she is armed with all the documents required in order for this procedure to be successful. The required documents is available under the “Required Documents” section on this page.
  4. When this process is completed After meeting all the criteria becomes an official member of the library and issued with the library card.
  5. The process typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes when libraries are completely automated, or within one week of presenting all the information required when the library service is not fully automated.
  6. This process is free However, library visits cost an additional fee.

Required Documents For  Apply for National Library of Uganda Membership

  • Below are the requirements for registration for Ugandan citizens as well as non-citizens.

Ugandan citizen Adult (16 years and over)

  1. An understanding of the library’s User’s Manual.
  2. Completed membership form.
  3. A duplicate from National Identification documents.
  4. Engagement from the employer or the Head of the institution.
  5. One recent passport size colour photos.

Ugandan Citizen – Child

  1. A clear understanding of the library’s User’s Manual.
  2. Affirmation of membership must be completed.
  3. Engagement from the Head Teacher and parents.
  4. One recent passport size colour photos.

Non-Ugandan citizen – Adult

  1. A clear understanding of the library’s User’s Manual.
  2. Affidavit of membership must be completed.
  3. Valid passport.
  4. A letter of introduction from the home office or work permit.
  5. One recent passport size colour photos.

Non-Ugandan citizen – Child

  1. Completed membership form.
  2. Valid passport.
  3. One recent passport size colour photos.

Institutional Member

  1. An understanding of the library’s User’s Manual.
  2. Letter of application with signature of the head of institution who is serve as a Guarantor.
  3. Group to provide the name and the details of a member of their staff who will be in charge of returning and borrowing library books.

Information that can be useful

  • National Library of Uganda (NLU) Board is a statutory institution belonging to the Government of Uganda established by National Library Act 17 of Parliament in 2003, which is part of the Laws of Uganda. The purpose of the Board is to create, encourage, and establish and provide libraries across Uganda.
  • Act 2003 Act 2003 repealed Public Libraries Act, 1964 that created the Public Libraries Board. The Board was tasked with the responsibility of creating the, equipping, and managing the libraries of Uganda. In the wake of the adoption in 1997 of the Local Governments Act, 1997 this task was transferred to local authorities.
  • It was the Public Libraries Board and later the National Library of Uganda retained the responsibility of establishing national policies pertaining to these libraries, providing recommendations, releasing standards guidelines, norms, and work guides, offering professional and technical advisory services as well as coordination and lobbying for libraries on both the international and local levels.
