  1.   2. It is then time to identify an appropriate location collect, bulking, and storage of raw milk, as well as the skilled personnel to manage the facility. Be sure that the place is in compliance with the laid out hygienic as well as operational standards. (These are listed in the section on eligibility.)
  3. Contact the local Dairy Development Authority office to receive a notice of preliminary inspection of your premises.

  7. A request to take on dairy farmer group or individual farmers must be submitted on Form 3 laid by the Schedule of the Regulations.
  8. The application should be accompanied by a fee as specified in the Fourth Schedule of the Regulations.
  9. The application along with the fees mentioned above , ensure that the structures:
    • The unit’s housing must have sufficient space that it can be used in the most hygienic or clean conditions.
    • and design should allow for the placement of equipment in so as not to hinder flow of product or personnel.
    • The materials used for construction must be safe for human consumption.
    • The materials must be impervious to water and not decomposable in the workplace, however this does not include the use of polyethylene linings.
    • The walls of the workplace must be clean, smooth and uniform in design.
    • Find regular consultation from DDA’s Compliance Officers regarding their advice on the Milk Cottage industry , how they should be designed , and equipment layouts are discussed.
  10. When dairy farmer groups or individuals farmers or facilities, call the closest DDA office to arrange for an initial examination of your facility.
  11. When areas of non-compliance are found in the inspections, adjustments are required to ensure that everything is in order.
  12. If everything is in order, you are able to proceed to the next step . You will need to apply for a dairy farmer group or an individual farmer license or permit via the Dairy Development Authority Licensing Board.
  13. After payment has been made, the dairy farmer group or individual farmer’s licenses are processed after twenty-five working days.
  14. The license is valid for a for one year, and you are able to start your business immediately.
  15. Pay the monthly dues and levy when and where appropriate. Other requirements of the license’s issue must be followed (Non-compliance could result in the suspension of the permit)

Eligibility

  • A license for the primary producer of milk is granted to dairy farmer groups as well as individuals who are involved in the collection, bulking and selling of raw milk.
  • The premises for handling milk must be in compliance with the laid-out hygiene and operational standards. This includes compliance with the following areas;
  1. Premises: must be appropriately situated and designed, ventilated, illuminated and shielded from contamination
  2. Equipment: Equipment pipes accessories, and other contact surfaces that come into contact with milk or milk products ought to be simple to clean and disinfect, durable and constructed from food-grade material
  3. Personnel: All milk handling employees must be well-groomed and clean in a well-dressed, professional attire and certified medically
  4. Records of high quality must be maintained and kept up-to-date
  5. Waste management: Effluents and other solid wastes must be managed according to rules and regulations
  6. Utilities: Affordable supply of potable water as well as other essential utilities based on the kind of operation
  7. Management: The premises must be managed by competent manager or supervisor.
  8. Operations: The recommended processing schedules must be adhered to e.g. temperatures for pasteurization and time controls
  9. Vermin and rodent control The premises should be secured from invasion by flies rodents, birds, as well as other vermin

Fees

  • Annual license fees of 100,000 GH
  • Application fees are free.

Validity

  • The duration of validity is one year.
  • In the event of non-compliance, it could result in the suspension of the permit

Processing Time

The processing time is 25 days.

Instructions

  1. Make sure that the premises for handling milk are to be in compliance with the standards of inspection.
  2. Ask the building to be examined with DDA inspectors. DDA inspectorate.
  3. Inspection is based on the an application cost.
  4. Following a successful inspection, the client submits an application for lease of the property after payment of the necessary charges.
  5. Licenses are issued.
