  • To obtain an authorization for keeping a cat the cat’s owner must submit an application for registration with the local government office in which area the pet is kept.
  • The applicants will be required to pay the application fee, which is non-refundable.
  • The authorities will assign a registration number for the cat. They will also give the cat’s owner an official registration certificate on the prescribed form for the cat.

The owner of the cat will be issued a registration tag for the cat , which will display the registration number assigned for the pet.

What Are All The Eligibility

A cat owner who is six months of age must ensure that their pet is registered.

This rule will not apply in the following situations:
(a) The cat was kept by the owner at a lower time than or
(b) the individual is a resident of the State less than 14 calendar days; or
(c) The cat belongs to the class of cats which is not required to register.

A cat cannot be registered unless the local authority is convinced that any of the following applies:

  • the applicant is a minor less than 18 years old;
  • The cat belongs to the category of cats that is prescribed as being exempt from registration
  • The cat isn’t microchipped (if not exempted)
  • The cat is not sterilised;(if the cat is not exempted)
  • the applicant was convicted within the past three years of two or more of the following: among the following:
    • (i) (iii) this Act;
    • (ii) (iii) the Dog Act 1976;
    • (iii) (iii) Animal Welfare Act 2002

Fees

  • Request for Permits to keep a cat: $50.00 non-refundable
  • The claim for an impound cat $30.00 with applicable fine
  • The cost of a cat impounded: $30.00 per day or some portion thereof

Cat Local Law

  • Cats are allowed to be kept as pets for domestic use at Christmas Island. However, as per Commonwealth quarantine laws cats are not allowed to be brought to the island. It is also possible to remove cats off the island in accordance with quarantine regulations.
  • The Shire has implemented the Cat Local Law to control the number of pets kept by residents and to ensure the beauty of the town as well as the natural environment. This Cat Local Law states that cats need to register with the local authority in the area where the cat is normally kept.
