What are the skill requirements for electrical engineering?

Electrical engineer skills

1. An electrical engineer should have a solid understanding of basic electrical concepts. At the very least, he should know how to install a fluorescent tube and ceiling fan.

2. He must be able understand SLDs (Single Line diagrams). He should also have an excellent knowledge of Alternating Current (AC).

3. He should be familiar with power generation at various power stations.

4. He should be well-versed in the use of protection equipments in an electrical power system.

5. He should be well-versed in electrical machinery.

6. He should be familiar with the basics of any SLD and simulation softwares such as ETAP, Matlab, and others. He should be able to communicate his ideas.

7. He should be able to understand the safety precautions an electrician must follow while working.

8. An electrical engineer does not need to have field skills because these jobs are usually performed by linemen. However, he should know how to do them.

The industry in which the person works will determine the level of their skills. An Automation engineer should be familiar with SCADA, HMI, PLCs and other based systems. A power engineer or substation engineer must also have an in-depth knowledge of the power system.
