With the improved engineering of electric cars today, why don’t more of them just have solar panels on their roofs?

It’s pointless.

At best, the roof of a car can collect around 300W.

Even slow overnight chargers can charge the battery up to 7kW.

To cruise at highway speeds, an EV will also need between 6-10 kW.

A rooftop solar panel doesn’t have any meaningful range.

You can drive almost for free if you cover your roof with solar panels. This makes more sense.
